Fire

Fire swept across heathland close to Yesilkent and Konya

It was fanned by very high winds and caught hold very quickly

Fire-engines were in attendance but it soon became clear that it was moving quicker than they could control it

So they called in the air-borne fire service

It took 2 aeroplanes and 2 helicopters, scooping water from the sea and dousing the flames, to bring it under control

The flames got within metres of Konya. The villagers had to be evacuated and the village itself was continuously bombarded with water to protect it from the encroaching blaze.

Well done the fire brigade for finally getting it all under control and putting it out.

Almost Finished

As you can see from this photo, the main mosque being constructed in Didim is almost finished.

Such a grand building for a small seaside town.

Lifeboat Drill

We went to Kusadasi today, and while there one of the big liners in port decided to have a lifeboat drill.

All the lifeboats along the starboard side were lowered, and raced around the harbour for  a while.

There were 13 in all along the side and the same again on the port side.

We wondered how many survivors each lifeboat could take on board, and whether there would be enough space for all crew and passengers.
Looking at the size of the ship compared to that of the lifeboats, probably not.
